Tough Lady

(Myrna Bituin with husband Jose Bituin)

If there is one entrepreneur who can catch a peso in thin air, that would be Myrna Bituin, owner and founder of Betis Crafts. For those who are not familiar with Betis Crafts, it is one of the most-successful companies in furniture design and manufacturing. Betis Crafts is now exporting to Europe and other parts of the globe with their state-of-the-art designs.

Myrna Bituin started the business with his husband, Jose Bituin. From small handy crafts, the business grew in years given their ingenuity, perseverance and resourcefulness.

In one of her lectures, Bituin said she was trained under Henry Sy during the early years of SM Prime Holdings. As an employee, she learned to be punctual, industrious and professional in her job. No extra time for personal affairs but focused in work. Every minute counted. If their time in is 8:00 a.m., they go to work at 7:30 a.m. That is the rule. Be early. Be diligent. Be honest. And be driven.

And as a successful entrepreneur now, Bituin said the clients are partners, and not just customers. You work with them even in the roughest of times. They will help you sail smoothly amid the crisis. So work well with them and threat them as a family. And before I forget, she said one of her secrets in business is to be honest and fair and God will do the rest.

Myrna Bituin is an awarded and revered entrepreneur in Pampanga. She is one of the many faces of success stories in business. Hers is another story of honesty, sincerity and responsibility to our fellowmen, even if they are part of the commercial clientele.

Corporate Genius

(Luciano with the late Pope John Paul II. Photo from jci)

If there is one person I know who definitely deserves to be in this space, that would be Victor Jose “Chichos”Luciano, the president and CEO of the Clark International Airport (CIAC). Luciano is the best man to stir the firm developing the Diosdado International Airport (DMIA). Unlike his predecessors, he has the utmost intellect, capability and experience to handle aviation affairs.

His past work at the Asiana Airlines, the second flag carrier of South Korea, gave him the corporate savvy in the aviation industry. Under his stewardship, CIAC gained numerous entitlements to fly in various countries now including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, China and more. There are also active international flights in DMIA today reaching 52 flights a week. Thanks to Luciano’s amazing team at CIAC. In a few months, the new terminal at DMIA will be constructed. More passengers are seen to choose Clark as their travel portal.

Luciano is not only a great corporate genius. He is likewise a man with a soft heart for his community. He used to be an international president of Jaycees. Today, he attends to some socio-civic works and provides inspiration to many.

Each time I see him, he never fails to flash a genuine smile and say sincere words of greetings. Sir Chichos to many is simply a wonderful person. I wish he would stay for a lifetime in CIAC. The people of Pampanga and Central Luzon deserve a man of integrity and genius to run the affairs of CIAC and DMIA.

Dreams Come True

For pop princess Sarah Geronimo, dreams indeed come true. If you dream hard enough and you work hard enough, chances are you will get what you want. They say life is all about passion, persuasion and attitude.

Sarah or Sarah Asher Tua Geronimo in real life is a girl who came from a poor family in Concepcion, Tarlac, Philippines. Before becoming a professional singer and actress, she joined numerous amateur singing contests since age 7. Her mother supported her all the way even if it would mean extra expenses on their very tight budget at home.

Of course their sacrifices and determination paid off. Sarah won at the Start for a Night, a television singing competition hosted by Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez. And everything is history.

Sarah did not make it to the top by luck. Unlike Charice Pempengco who was discovered via youtube, Sarah invested sweat, tears and a strong determination to reach for her dreams. Although equally talented, Sarah gives us a better perspective of how life is fair most of the times.

If we work hard enough, we will reap what we sow.

Small but big world

Just like us, he has daily obligations. He works like anybody else. He has two daughters to feed and to send to school. His wife already died last year.

She was 23 when she died. He married her when she was only 15. Just like any other couple, they had a few issues but generally lived happed and peacefully.

But unlike us, Ricardo Lansang is a small man living in a big world. He only stands four (4) feet. He said that when he asked his wife’s family for their blessing in their marriage, everyone were against it.

His parents-in-law even wanted to file rape charges against him because his late wife was a minor then. But their love won over all the odds.

Ricardo said he is lucky though that his children are physically normal. Unlike him, they are growing fast and strong just like their late mother. Today, he works as a peanut vendor in Angeles City. He said that despite his being a midget, he is happy for his blessings and an opportunity to be loved like any other man.

Ricardo’s story tells us that no matter how different we may look, it is our heart and soul that will be seen by others.

Environment Champion

(Photo from sciencemag)
Among many scientists working on environmental protection and marine life culture, a Filipina made it to the top list of Time Magazine. A holder of PhD in marine science and an author of about 50 peer reviewed papers, Jurgenne Primavera is a special woman with extraordinary intellect, passion, vision and judgment.

Primavera is very well respected and known for her works in prawn culture and mangrove forests. Primavera’s research established an important link between the mangroves and sustainability of marine culture.
She recommended to prawn growers to set aside some 25 percent of their production area for mangroves to sustain production of prawns.

Although she is less recognized in the country due to the limited interest of majority of Filipinos to aquaculture and environmental issues, Primavera made it to the international scene by being named as an Environment Heroine of the Time Magazine in 2008.

Primavera is just one of the many talented and genius Filipinos who silently work for noble causes. Her kind are often less appreciated but their achievements provide a remarkable imprint to mankind’s history and development.

Healing Priest

They are building a statue of Mother Mary taller than the Statue of Liberty. It is the talk of the town, especially to the Catholics. It is being built as a sanctuary to the faithfuls seeking remedy for their ailments and answers to their prayers. It will be the home of Father Fernando Suarez, the now famous Filipino-Canadian healing priest.

Father Suarez hails from Taal, Batangas. He is 41 years old. He is the one supervising the Montemaria Shrine, a project of the Mary Mother of the Poor Foundation (MMPF), a group that aims to “seek holiness in evangelizing and working with the poor through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

Father Suarez said in his dreams, a plan came into life – an image of the majestic statue of Virgin Mary looking over the horizon, a guide for travelers and a proclamation of love and faith.

During his healing Masses in the Philippines, thousands of faithfuls line up to hear Father Suarez’s prayers. He is considered as a gift from God by many. Some believe that he was chosen to heal their wounds, both physically and emotionally. Whether or not his gift is true, still Father Suarez was very charismatic and credible enough to put up a huge infrastructure project such as the Montemaria Shrine. It is a multi-million project -- all funds from private individuals and followers, none from the government.

Father Suarez is quite a phenomenon in the Catholic circle. His kinds are rare. Some are real and some are fallacy. His works reflect the a culture of men who believe in miracles and extraordinary works of faith.

Powerful Voice

Even in darkness, a little voice can spark a light…That is Charise Pempengco. In the midst of quandary and hopelessness for many Filipinos, she became an inspiration.

Her fame began when she was discovered by Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey on YouTube. With a voice that is as powerful as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, Charise Pempengco is a born diva.

Her latest stint at the pre-inauguration party of newly-elected US President Barack Obama captures the entirety of Charise’s fairy tale-like life. From a simple girl dreaming of becoming a known singer, she was given an opportunity to become enormous and famous all over the world.

Charise’s story is a light to every artist struggling to be appreciated and discovered. Her story is a reminder that even in our darkest hour, we should have faith. Somewhere, sometime, someone will answer our prayers.

Making History

If there is one person in the world that has the most influence among people right now, that would be US President Barack Obama.

The first African-American to be elected in the most powerful and influential country in the globe, Obama is not only an inspiration to many but also a face of hope.

His greatest challenge could be to reach the White House. But equally challenging is the responsibility that comes with his power, especially in times when everyone watches the United States.

His sensational $787 billion stimulus package, which is still being attacked by some Republicans, will be his first acid test as a leader. His vision for America rising anew in the future will be carefully monitored by other nations.

But whether or not he succeeds, Obama will always be a part of mankind’s great history. He is the face of every African-American and all other non-American nations living in United States. He is the face of determination and hope in an era of great odds and challenges.

Obama is just one of the few men in mankind’s history who will always be remembered no matter what. Just like Mahatma Ghandi, Adolf Hitler, John F. Kennedy and other “immortalized” personalities in the world.

Fighting the Odds

Cathy is a 29-year-old mother of three. She is working in Dubai right now. She is one of the millions of OFWs in Middle East. She used to work with me at the Pampanga Provincial Government. There are two words that remind me of her – outgoing and problematic.

Her life to begin with is full of heartaches. Abandoned by her former husband, she was totally devastated for years. Leaving her was already painful but his failure to support the children doubles the trauma.

At the time we were together at work, Cathy would always ask me for guidance and would lengthily talk about her frustrations and problems at home. I could only offer some advice and some financial support. I always told her that her life, even at its worst, could still be something she could cling into. As long as we live there is hope and I firmly believe on that. Life can be so difficult but everything works for the best at the end.

She would date various men to temporarily forget her problems. Most often than not, she would ask us to spend time together drinking and hanging out. Those were fun days and sad at the same time.

I miss her company. I hope she is working well now and earning enough for her children. I wish her all the best.

Cathy is just one of the millions single parents around the world. It is really hard to be one. Sacrifice is the best word to describe their life. But hero can best describe them as persons.

Pambansang Kamao

He is the Pambansang Kamao (national fist) of millions of Filipinos all over the world. His life is inspiring to many. He became a living hero to the poor and a hope for the Filipino athletes.

He is now a world personality. He has NBA and celebrity fans. For a 30-year-old diminutive boxer, Manny Pacquiao is indeed very special. Winning numerous titles in the world boxing arena, now he is about to face one of Great Britain’s known boxer, Ricky Hatton.

In their first meeting in United Kingdom, Pacquiao was more than eager to show his sportsmanship. In all his fights, Pacquiao was never too confident when interviewed. Just like any other determined Pinoy, he shows his prowess at the ring.

But Pacquiao, just like any other celebrity, wants political power all the same. His budding political career in the Philippines has yet to unfold.

"Every time I fight, I have to win because millions of Filipinos are hoping for victory. Every time I go home, after my fights, I do activities to help the people - and that's a part of my political career. It is incredibly hard to be a politician and popular, but that is to my advantage in running for office," said Pacquiao in a recent interview.

Good or bad, Pacquiao remains an inspiration to many. He is a true Filipino icon. I just hope that he will just stick it at the boxing world so as not to taint his name.

A Life of an Angel

Pain. Sorrow. Grief. Actually, there is no exact word
to express what his family experiences right now. He was taken too soon. And sadly, in a way that is very difficult to accept.

Julian Carlo Miguel "Amiel" Alcantara was killed in an accident inside the Ateneo de Manila University parking lot recently. He was run over by a speeding van driven by Ma. Theresa Songco Torres.

Amiel was only 10 years old. Of course, his family was devastated. I can only sympathize with them. It is very hard to think that such a wonderful child would die too soon. He could have become a great man.

Losing someone in an unexpected way is a traumatic experience. One needs enough courage to face reality. And as they say only time can heal the pain.

When asked by the media whether or not he has forgiven Amiel’s killer, his father has this to say: “If he can look at herself in a mirror and says that she already forgave herself…then she would be forgiven.”

Amiel’s killer was already charged before the courts. She posted bail for temporary liberty. Amiel’s case is one in a thousand. It doesn’t happens everyday that a child would be accidentally killed in a parking lot.

Lost Dreams

A 20-year old Filipina ballerina was killed in United States. I don’t know her. I don’t even know how she looks. All I know is her name. Beatrice Mary Saludares. She was hit by a car on Route 24 in Harford County, Md.

She was part of the Washington Ballet Studio’s Company tour for the 2008-2009 season. According to the ballet company’s artistic director, Mary was a beautiful dancer and a “radiant soul” who always share peac e and joy.

Kind words. That is all that was left of Mary’s dreams. I reach out more for her family. She died too soon not fulfilling her dreams yet. Her parents are most devastated because the person responsible for her death has not been charged yet. What a pity.

I wish that all those who seek justice will be given justice. Even if it means that they are aliens in American soil. I am joining the appeal to jail Mary’s killer. America is a land of dreams. It is a land of salvation for the oppressed. So it must be.

Saludares is just one of the many Filipinas who died in foreign soil. Most often than not, they were deprived of the justice they deserve. This is reality if you come from a third-world county like ours.
